FALSETTOS ON THE BIG SCREEN FROM BROADWAY:
EVEN UP CLOSE, THERE’S NOT A FALSE NOTE
The musical masterpiece Falsettos follows Marvin, who struggles to create a tightknit family out of his eclectic array of core relationships (including his ex-wife, his new boyfriend, his adolescent son, his psychiatrist, and his neighbors (“who are lesbians from next door”). Amidst a series of monumental life changes, he is forced to reckon with his own views on love, responsibility and what it means to be a man.
Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of the William Finn-James Lapine musical, which follows this quirky group of New Yorkers from the late 1970s (Act I) to beginnings of the AIDS crisis (Act II), was nominated for five Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical.
Now, homosexuals, women with children, and short insomniacs are actually coming to a movie theater near you. For those who can’t get to Broadway, this is the next best thing. In fact, in many ways, it’s better: You get a front row seat and the ticket price is only fifteen bucks. The limited-run but lauded production will appear in movie theaters nationwide, with the first exhibition date on July 12, 2017 (there are future showings at select theaters).
Falsettos stars Christian Borle, Stephanie J. Block, Andrew Rannells, and Brandon Uranowitz, all of whom received Tony nominations for their respective performances. Anthony Rosenthal, Tracie Thoms, and Besty Wolfe round out the talented cast. The production was filmed live at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City in January 2017. Of course it’s an incredibly funny and moving show, but your attendance means that it will likely be more commonplace for major Broadway productions to be taped for future screenings.
