GANGSTER MUSICAL
You’ve seen the movie, you’ve seen the car, now see the musical. Meet the most famous robbing, murdering, loving couple in U.S. history. From their first meeting at a West Texas diner through their tumultuous courtship and romance, from their brief, history-making crime spree to their fateful final drive through Louisiana, this thrilling and sexy show evokes the 30s depression era and the Southern locale, using Frank Wildhorn’s score (lyrics by Don Black, book by Ivan Menchell) that combines Rockabilly, Blues, Gospel and more. Chases, escapes, poetry, family, prison assaults, dancing, betrayal and lots and lots and lots of gunfire.
Bonnie and Clyde’s premiere took place in 2009 at the La Jolla Playhouse with a subsequent Broadway opening in 2011. Despite running just four weeks, the musical was nominated for three Outer Critics Circle Awards and five Drama Desk Awards, both including Best New Musical, as well as two nominations for the 2012 Tony ® Awards.
Now, Musical Theatre Guild (returning to their home of many years, the Alex Theatre in Glendale) will present as its 20th season opener the Los Angeles area premiere as a one-night concert staged reading this Sunday, September 20 at 7 pm. With direction by Calvin Remsberg and musical direction by Tom Griep, the MTG artists include Chuck Bergman, Christopher Callen, Christopher Carothers, Will Colyer, Julie Garnye, Jennifer Gordon, Scott Harlan, Barbara Carlton Heart, Ashley Fox Linton, Kevin McMahon, Brandon Michael Perkins, Alyssa M. Simmons and Kevin Symons. Guest artists rounding out the enormous cast are David Atkinson, Tyler Ledon, Josey Montana McCoy, Carly Nykanen, Grant Palmer and Jaidyn Young.
