ACTUALLY, THERE ARE LIMITS

You know The Piano Guys, right? Their YouTube channel is one of the most popular on the planet? Technically, it’s  the duo of pianist Jon Schmidt and cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, but there’s two more. The squeaky-clean 21st-century multimedia Utah-based empire is also producer Al van der Beek and videographer Paul Anderson, who can be credited with the fact that The Piano Guys’ fifty-five-plus music videos have gone off-the-map viral (1.5 billion views).

So I put on their latest CD. Pseudo-disco; heart-tugging electronica; mash-ups of classical and pop; a decidedly Celtic sound from Nelson’s amplified cello; reverberating New Age piano (both reflective and pounding); great sound engineering; and no vocals. I think the CD cover is wrong. It says The Piano Guys Limitless  when, clearly, this is the score of a dolphin show at Sea World.

I think the Piano Guys are just bringing two genres together. Many have tried in the past, remember Hooked On Classics? These are introducing classical music to a new, younger age group. Long may they continue!
