The name Casino Royale itself brings a hoard of joy into the minds of many audiences. It is possibly one of the finest movies of James Bond that is based on a casino theme. Well, 007 is himself a fantastic Poker player and has appeared in numerous casino scenes before too. But the fact that the central theme of the movie is a casino makes this one more special. This movie created a cult in the box office and was watched by millions of people worldwide. Daniel Craig, the new bond gained instant fame with the movie.

Casino Royale

Casino Royale is a 2006 spy film, the twenty-first in the Eon Productions James Bond film series and the third screen adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel of the same name. Directed by Martin Campbell and written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and Paul Haggis, it is the first film to star Daniel Craig as the fictional M16 agent James Bond. Casino Royale takes place at the beginning of Bond’s career as Agent 007, as he is earning his license to kill. The plot has Bond on an assignment to bankrupt terrorist financier Le Chiffre in a high-stakes Poker game. Bond falls in love with Vesper Lynd, a treasury employee assigned to provide the money he needs for the game. The film begins a story arc that continues in the 2008 film, Quantum of Solace.

Daniel Craig as James Bond, A British M16 officer, who after being assigned 00 status, is sent on a mission to arrest a bomb-maker in Madagascar, where he stumbles upon Le Chiffre’s terrorist cell and is then sent to defeat him in a high-stakes Poker game at Casino Royale. Eva Green as Vesper Lynd, an agent for HM Treasury assigned to supervise Bond and finance him in a high-stakes Poker game at Casino Royale. Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, a banker who services many of the world’s terrorists, he is a mathematical genius and expert chess player and uses these skills when playing Poker. Judi Dench as M, the head of M16, although she feels she has promoted Bond too soon and chides him for his rash actions, she acts as an important maternal figure in his life. The other important cast includes Giancarlo Giannini as Rene Matis, Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter, Simon Abkarian as Alex Dimitrios, Caterina Murino as Solange Dimitrios.

Amazing facts about the movie

Daniel Craig was injured in the sets of Casino Royale when he was filming an action scene. He lost two of his front teeth and had a dentist fly from London to replace them. Just two days after the premiere, pirated copies got circulated and were being sold in London. In fact, Daniel Craig was offered a copy while he was on a trip to Beijing. He was wearing a cap and glasses and so people could not identify him. To make his performance better, Daniel Craig hired a personal trainer to be in great shape and fitness. He also tried to perform all the stunts himself as much as he could.  

Ian Fleming had celebrated the first draft of the novel Casino Royale by buying a gold-plated typewriter. In fact, Pierce Brosnan who had previously acted as Bond purchased it later. Most importantly, Casino Royale was the first 007 film to be released in Chinese theatres. The Chinese Version had some minor edits before release.

Critics responded with praise to the film, in particular, to Craig’s performance and credibility.
