The Original Cast Recording of Here We Are, the new musical from David Ives and Stephen Sondheim, was recorded earlier this week at Power Station at BerkleeNYC and will be released by Concord Theatricals Recordings in spring 2024. And I couldn’t be happier because, if for no other reason, the long exit music was one of Sondheim’s most stellar works.
The musical is inspired by two films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel, by Luis Buñuel. Now playing through January 21 at The Shed’s Griffin Theater (545 W 30th St), 2024, Here We Are is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, and features Francois Battiste, Tracie Bennett, Bobby Cannavale, Micaela Diamond, Amber Gray, Jin Ha, Rachel Bay Jones, Denis O’Hare, Steven Pasquale, David Hyde Pierce, and Jeremy Shamos.
The album is produced by Bill Rosenfield and Sean Patrick Flahaven, who is Chief Theatricals Executive for Concord. Flahaven worked with Sondheim for 25 years in various musical capacities, including on over a dozen albums, and won a GRAMMY Award® for producing the 2022 Broadway revival cast recording of Into the Woods. Rosenfield is responsible for, among others, the original recordings of Sondheim’s Assassins and Putting It Together, as well as over 60 other original cast recordings.
