Otherworld Theatre, North America’s premier fantasy and genre live theatre production company, is bringing The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical to the theatre’s Chicago storefront location July 12–August 18, 2024. This electrifying adaptation of Rick Riordan’s best-selling 2005 young adult novel promises an adventure “worthy of the gods.” When The Lightning Thief came through Chicago on a national tour in 2019, Stage and Cinema said, “Cult fans of this fantasy will find this two-hour chamber musical faithful fun, as Joe Tracz’s adaptation captures the highlights. It’s boldly effective at catering to adolescent rebellion, merrily morphing into a modern mythology, a pagan comeback to put Christianity into limbo. As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly discovered powers he can’t control, a destiny he doesn’t want, and a mythology textbook’s worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus’s master lightning bolt is stolen, and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. But to succeed in his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the thief. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend, and come to terms with the father who abandoned him. Directed and produced by Otherworld Theatre’s Artistic Director Tiffany Keane Schaefer and Collin Borisenko, the production team also includes Karina Osbourne (Lighting Design) and Giselle Durand (Stage Manager).
