I’M DREAMING OF A PSYCHEDLIC CHRISTMAS
Well, Halloween is here soon, but you know what’s really scary ’” aside from Christmas items for sale at Costco before Valentine’s Day? By Thanksgiving, tickets will no doubt be sold out for The Troubies’ newest Holiday Show, Home Alone-ly Hearts Club Band, which plays December 5-22, 2024. For those who don’t know them, this wacky troupe has a justly tremendous and loyal following, including me, because this is live theater with an emphasis on live and on theater. So, say, “Good Morning Good Morning” starting October 21st, cause that’s when tix go on sale.
For 29 years, the Troubadour Theater Company (aka The Troubies) has amalgamated freely altered classics with music of a particular artist, creating riotous sketch/improv/entertainments that are liberally seasoned with an air of Commedia dell’Arte; this gives the immensely talented players the opportunity to act, sing, dance, improvise, and perform feats of acrobatic skill (or will there be acrobats skillfully performing on their feet?). After performing for years at the Falcon Theatre (now the Garry Marshall), the merrymakers of mash-up musical mayhem have moved their mirth to the super-swell Colony Theatre.
But will they need me “When I’m Sixty-Four“? Oh, wait, I did turn 64 this year. But I need them. Never mind. Anyway, in their latest holiday gift to all you “Lovely Rita(s),” The Troubies will be mashing up the movie Home Alone with the Beatles’ classic 1967 touchstone album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. You’ll feel like you just took a hit of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds“! (Last year The Troubies combined the film White Christmas with the Beatles epic double record the White Album to very white results.)
Trust me, “With a Little Help from My Friends,” you will be grateful after you spend “A Day in the Life” with these consummate cutups. (Oh, and show up late — it’s awesome!) “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” (that’s what I call my boyfriend, cause he’s so flighty) and you, it’s safe to say that everyone will be “Getting Better” this season. So get those tickets, because The Troubies don’t wanna be “Within You Without You.” I’ll see you there. If anyone asks where I am, say, “She’s Leaving Home” to see about “Fixing a Hole” with 8-year-old Kevin McAllister (ugh — that did not come out right).
