Thousands of people know Joshua Henry from numerous high-profile shows on Broadway (including THREE Tony-nominated performances), and as he ramps up for the release of his debut full-length record Grow (out Sept. 10), he can be heard leaning into the classic R&B that inspired him. Mr. Henry is best known for his Tony-nominated run in The Scottsboro Boys and as Aaron Burr in the first touring company of Hamilton. His other Broadway credits include Bring It On: The Musical, In the Heights, American Idiot, and Carousel. He will be in the stage-to-screen adaptation of of Tick, Tick… Boom!, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, and more! Though his time on Broadway has made him a star, Joshua’s love of music started in a childhood steeped in the works of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and even Outkast. The way a solid vocal delivery and slick production could be paired with catchy & inspired lyrics set the foundation of Joshua’s musical upbringing. His brother & he would spend hours listening to reggae and jazz on the radio growing up, plucking away at their father’s guitar they found in the garage. Listen to album cuts “Checking In” & “Guarantee” and you will definitely hear his adolescent influences (as well as Curtis Mayfield who Joshua cites as a major inspiration while he was working on the new album). The album’s title Grow partially stems from the artistic evolution and creative stretching Joshua had to go through to make the record. Transitioning from a Broadway star to a recording musician performing songs he wrote himself made him “become a student again” in a way — the idea of growth and embracing the unexpected newness of all situations really shaped the record. ‘Grow’ Tracklisting Love Me Guarantee Possible Awe Of Her Tomorrow Hold Me Stand Up Checking In Take My Breath Away JOSHUA HENRY ON SOCIALS WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM |
