The Strangest Phenomena That Have Inspired Films and TV Shows
Mate: There are some odd things in this world, and they have inspired plenty of films and TV shows over the years. Please find out more about them here!
While we might dream up stories based in strange fantasy lands or the furthest reaches of space, there is no denying that life here on Planet Earth can occasionally be a little odd. As a result, many people have taken some of the strangest phenomena we have yet to explore and created films and television shows with them.
The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle is an area of the Atlantic Ocean that stretches from Florida to the island of Bermuda to Puerto Rico. Many ships and aircraft g missing here; the disappearances have sparked a lot of conversation about what could be causing this. In addition to the suggestion that it could be alien abductions, many observers believe the disappearances are caused by magnetic anomalies, the Gulf Stream, or even human error caused by people misjudging storms in that area.
ThisSuch banal explanations for the disappearances have not stopped the minds of many creatives spinning and coming up with stories based on this area. From games that see you exploring these waters to films like the 2009 Triangle or the 1978 Bermuda Triangle, there is no end to exciting content produced by this seemingly innocent stretch of water.
Lost Cities
Supposedly lost cities like Atlantis and El Dorado have captured the attention of thousands over the years. Though there is very little evidence that these cities have ever existed, there has been so much speculation as to where they may have been and what treasures they could hold if they do exist.
Atlantis was first mentioned in an allegory by the Ancient Greek philosopher Plato. It is famously an island that sunk below the waves and is often thought to be in the Atlantic Ocean. It has appeared in games like the Lara Croft franchise and appears in Jules Verne’s classic 1870 novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Interestingly, actor Jason Momoa has explored Atlantis twice in his career thus far – once in Stargate Atlantis and as Aquaman in the DCEU.
El Dorado, or the City of Gold, is another lost city that has inspired countless adventurers. It originally was a story about a mythical chief of the Muisca people of Colombia who would cover himself in gold dust and submerge himself in Lake Guatavita. However, the stories expanded until they were about a whole city-state. Famous expeditions by Sir Walter Raleigh and conquistadors like Gonzalo Pizarro have inspired TV shows, films like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Loch Ness Monster
Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands is home to Nessie or the Loch Ness Monster. Some have suggested that she is a plesiosaur; others have suggested that she is a kelpie from Scottish folklore. The tales of a monster in the Loch stretch back to the 6th century, where Saint Columba is said to have driven a monster back.
There have been many hoaxes and false sightings of Nessie over the years, but this has not stopped people from dreaming up explanations. The Scots Makar Edwin Morgan produced the humorous The Loch Ness Monster’s Song poem; the alleged monster has been used as a storyline in shows such as Doctor Who.
Area 51
Area 51 is a US Air Force base in Nevada, and it is highly classified, and no one is particularly sure what the USAF gets up to there. Such a situation, of course, encourages a lot of speculation. There are many conspiracy theories about what might be in Area 51, and many of them have to do with UFOs and aliens. In particular, many people think that the remains of a crashed alien spacecraft from Roswell, New Mexico, might be here, along with other evidence of extra-terrestrial life.
This belief has inevitably inspired many TV shows and films. From further references in the Indiana Jones franchise to characters like Roger from the animated show American Dad, there are plenty of references to aliens from Area 51. Area 51 is one of the areas where the American affair with extra-terrestrial life will always shine forth.
Just the Start
These are just some of the phenomena that we have seen impacting pop culture over the years. There are some genuinely indescribable sights out there, and they can often set people’s minds turning when they try to think about them. There is so much out there to find out about our world still. Though we might be focused on space travel, for now, there is no denying that some strange things happen down here on Earth, too. Will we ever get a concrete explanation for the oddities listed above? Probably not, but we can enjoy some great films and games about them in the meantime!
