Inspired by the novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada, writer/director Andrew Haigh plummets us into a world of a ghost-story fantasy romance filled with secrets. memory, regret, mourning, and love as few films do. Constantly surprising and emotional, it’s refreshing to have a movie with a gay couple at the center, yet it’s not about being gay as much as it is about being trapped.
One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died 30 years before.
Also impressive is the intimate, dreamlike and warm textural score by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch, which connects deeply with the characters and story, creating a stirring and nostalgic journey for the audiences. The film opened December 22 coinciding with the soundtrack’s release on digital platforms. There will also be a vinyl release in the new year on April 12, 2024.
