DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE, DOUBLE YOUR FUN

The Comedy of Errors is one of William Shakespeare’s earliest and most farcical comedies, centered around themes of mistaken identity and slapstick humor. The play tells the story of two sets of identical twins who were separated at birth, leading to a series of misunderstandings, wrongful accusations, and chaotic encounters when they unknowingly find themselves in the same city. With its quick pace and comedic mix-ups, The Comedy of Errors explores themes of identity, family, and the absurdities of human behavior, offering audiences a joyful and energetic theatrical experience. Directed by Artistic Director Simon Godwin, Shakespeare Theatre Company’s production embraces the chaos and absurdity of the play, delivering a fast-paced, laugh-filled experience that captivates its audience from start to finish.

Godwin infuses the production with vibrant visual and auditory elements, ensuring a lively pace throughout the performance. Notably, a talented group of on-stage musician storytellers adds depth to the experience. One of his clever early choices is to stage a vivid flashback, during which Egeon (Timothy D. Stickley) recounts the tragic events that led to his current predicament. As a native of Syracuse, Egeon faces execution for being in Ephesus, and he shares the heartbreaking tale of how a storm and shipwreck twenty years earlier separated him from his beloved wife, one of his twin sons, and the twin brother of his young servant — all of whom remain lost to him.

One of the key highlights of this staging is the impeccable comedic timing of Alex Brightman and David Fynn, who portray the twin servants Dromio of Syracuse and Dromio of Ephesus (coincidently these “twins” both starred as Dewey Finn in School of Rock — Brighton on Broadway and Fynn on the West End). Their performances are brimming with physical comedy, singing, slapstick antics, setting off hilarious confusion, all of which breathe life into Shakespeare’s witty dialogue.

The cast

Christian Thompson (Antipholus of Syracuse) and Ralph Adriel Johnson (Antipholus of Ephesus) both deliver commanding performances, each bringing a compelling presence that balances the antics of their Dromio counterparts. Their performances act as the driving force behind the more overt comedy, with both actors making a strong impact in every scene. Shayvawn Webster is electric as Adriana, the fiery yet bewildered wife, exuding confidence and stage presence with every line. Cloteal L. Horne, as Luciana, was a standout, captivating the audience with her thoughtful portrayal. Her character’s rationality perfectly complemented Webster’s intensity, while also capturing the heart of Antipholus of Syracuse. Horne’s performance has us rooting for her throughout.

Eric Hissom, Shayvawn Webster, Cloteal L. Horne, Kimberly Dodson, Ralph Adriel Johnson

Eric Hissom leaves a lasting impression with his performances in two distinctly different roles in The Comedy of Errors. Portraying the principled Duke of Solinus, he strikes a balance between sympathy and authority, maintaining the death sentence he has imposed on Egeon, the Syracusan found in Ephesus. Conversely, Hissom brings to life the quirky and whimsical character of “Doctor” Pinch, who employs an eccentric mix of tools and incantations in his comedic attempts to exorcise demons from Antipholus of Ephesus.

The cast

Director Godwin has cleverly utilized every corner of the stage (as well as through the audience), ensuring that the action flows seamlessly, and the choreography adds another layer of visual humor to the already packed script. Overall, this Comedy of Errors is a joyous, high-spirited take on one of Shakespeare’s most accessible plays. With snappy direction, an engaging cast, and vibrant visuals, it provides an evening of pure comedic delight — a true celebration of theatrical humor. Go see Comedy … TONIGHT!
