If you need proof that Andrew Lloyd Webber was more consistent in creating great musicals before helping turn Broadway into the spectacle-driven British juggernaut of the 1980s, look no further than Jesus Christ Superstar, now playing at CV Rep through March 23. Few musicals have the staying power of this groundbreaking rock opera penned by Webber along with Tim Rice. In this latest production, directed by Adam Karsten, the show bursts onto the stage with a fresh intensity, combining electrifying performances, striking visual aesthetic, and razor-sharp musical direction by Stephen Hulsey.

Steven Grant Douglas as Jesus

At the heart of the production is Christin Byrdsong as Judas, who delivers a powerhouse portrayal bringing urgency and complexity to the character’s inner turmoil. His rendition of “Heaven on Their Minds” is a thrilling opening statement, setting the tone for the entire show. I would like to someday see Birdsong in the role of Jesus. Opposite Birdsong is Steven Grant Douglas, as Jesus, whose performance is both raw and deeply affecting. More than his acting, Grant’s soaring vocals capture the anguish of a man burdened by destiny, particularly in “Gethsemane.”

Emily Kate Decker delivers a poignant Mary Magdalene, with a tender and heartfelt “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” Sam Sherwood as Pontius Pilate balances arrogance and reluctant duty, making his climactic interactions with Jesus particularly compelling. Jim J. Bullock offers satirical, comic relief in his featured performance as King Herod, stealing the spotlight with his rendition of “Herod’s Song.” It was apparent that Karsten cast this production with stellar performers when at the first performance, Noah Williams Canales, as Calaphas, got through “This Jesus Must Die,” with grace, soaring vocals, and impact without a functioning microphone. I was in the last row and heard every word. Featured standouts are Patrick Wallace (Simon), Joseph Portoles (Peter), and Anthony Arpino (Annas).

The ensemble is the heartbeat of this production. With electric choreography by Karen Seiber, they create an ever-moving, ever-reacting presence that amplifies the show’s intensity. From the jubilant “Hosanna” to the frenzied “The Temple” and the haunting “Trial Before Pilate,” the ensemble navigates the score’s complexities with seamless precision under Hulsey’s musical direction. Their vocals are impeccable, delivering the intricate harmonies with force, while their physicality—whether forming a chaotic mob or a reverent crowd—adds layers of depth to the storytelling. The synergy among the performers is palpable, making them an integral force driving the emotional stakes.

Scenic Designer Jimmy Cuomo creates a dynamic, multi-level environment depicting ancient Jerusalem helps to illustrate themes of power, spectacle, and sacrifice.

This Jesus Christ Superstar is a must-see—a gripping, visceral production that breathes new life into a classic. With powerhouse performances, thrilling visuals, and masterful musical direction, it reaffirms why this rock opera remains as electrifying and thought-provoking as ever.
