COMING AND CUMMING

Gay men and show tunes? I know this sounds shocking, but I wonder how many of you know what a swell fit that is. And to prove it, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) continues  its super-spectacular 38th Season with He Had It Coming, a showcase of Broadway’s best songs for three shows only  on April 1 and 2, 2017, at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. (Wait, a minute to reflect; 38 years??!! Shit, that means I’m…um…at least 38 years old.)

As if landing Cheyenne Jackson for their adorable Christmas concert last year wasn’t big enough, the boys have corralled another star of stage, TV, film and cabaret: that raconteur Alan Cumming, whose astounding Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs  was one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. (Wait, I’m confused. The title of the show is He Had It Coming? Shouldn’t it be He Had It Cumming? Either way, expect a Great White Way explosion… of kick-ass Broadway melodies, that is.)

Although there will always be something from the Golden Age, like Schwartz’s Pippin and Kander & Ebb’s  Chicago, a little birdie told me that  we’re gonna get arrangements of the hottest stuff on the boards, such as  Hamilton,  Book of Mormon, Avenue Q, and  Next To Normal. And while I may be in hot water for saying so without confirmation, I’m just guessing that the number from Kinky  Boots  will include some members from the chorus wickedly displaying a kind of  calf and/or knee-length, black and/or red leather, pull-on, 4-inch stiletto-heeled  boots  with pointed toes.  (Wait. Did I give anything away?)

What I did confirm is that this will be a  fete of festooned frivolity and fabulousness. Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Joe Nadeau  wrote,  “Where else can you bring together 250 gay men, Mormons, Drag Queens, Transgender Rock Stars, Shakespeare, conjoined twins in a carnival, British aristocracy, and cabaret singers in Nazi Germany and have it all make sense? This showcases GMCLA’s rich, stunning choral sound, spectacular production numbers, dazzling costumes, and a message that we can all make this world a better place where all of us can be our true authentic selves.” (Wait. I’m coming already. I mean, going. Um…don’t wait. It’ll be a hoot!)

So why not just call it, “He Had It Cumming”?
