MAKE THE YULETIDE GAY
Attending GMCLA’s Holiday Spectaculars is more like a pilgrimage for me, and is a no-brainer when choosing my wintertime concerts. The musical extravaganza this year, Holiday Spectacular: Calling All Angels, plays at Glendale’s gorgeous Alex Theatre for four performances Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 & 16, 2018. What better way is there to celebrate the season than 250 men warming up your yule log? Um … making sure it doesn’t go down and out!
The combination of vocal prowess with a heartfelt celebration of community makes the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles simply incomparable. One moment they make the yuletide gay with a supremely silly twist on an all-too-familiar holiday favorite (replete with colorful costumes, theatrical performances, and cute choreography); the next they lovingly rip your heart out of your chest with a soul-stirring rendition of a nonsecular hymn. First-timers will be dumbstruck by the sterling, world-class musicality of the chorus.
Just a few sweet songs you’ll hear include “Dear Santa, Bring Me a Man,” “The Annoying Drummer Boy,” and, of course, “Calling All Angels.” More than what’s on the menu is the palpable sense of community in store for you. That spirit which comes from celebrating survival with acceptance and love and tacky sweaters. Santa won’t be the only thing shooting out of your chimney!
This year, GMCLA offers the usual wide assortment of holiday hits and seasonal surprises, an eclectic mix of holiday treats sweeter than those cookies you wolfed before Daddy … I mean … Father Christmas got to them. Come on, it’s OK to be elfish this time of year. Come for the lumberjacks and maniacs, stay for the fruitcakes and snowflakes! Yule be glad you did.
