Ongoing Conversations:  The Summer Global Jazz Intensive Online at UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music  is a weeklong online summer intensive program designed for high school students ages 14-18. Using online platforms as an extended global classroom, the program brings performers together from across the world to create the nation’s first global jazz studies summer program.
Students will:
  • Learn from composers and arrangers who are recent graduates of the  Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA  and  UCLA Global Jazz Studies  faculty.
  • Participate in masterclasses, composition workshops, and performances designed around the participants’ musical interests and instrumentation.
  • Study approaches to composition and improvisation for soloists, small groups, and large ensemble.

  • 9:30 – 11:00am: Morning Session (Composition Workshops, Theory and Improvisation, Historical Contexts)
  • 11:00 – 11:15am: Break
  • 11:15am – 12:45pm: Master Classes with UCLA Global Jazz Faculty (Arturo O’Farrill, Steven Loza, Eddie Meadows)
  • 12:45 – 2:00pm: Lunch, and informal Q & A Session with Instructors (Topics: College audition prep, Careers in music)
  • 2:00 – 3:30pm: Private Instrumental Lessons and Coachings
  • 3:30 – 4:45pm: Afternoon Session (Composition Workshops, Theory and Improvisation, Historical Contexts)
  • 4:45 – 6:00pm: Listening and Instrumental Studio Classes
Family and friends invited to a Saturday virtual performance featuring all students.

These musicians are students at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. This intensive, graduate-level college program enables a select group of the world’s most promising young musicians to study tuition-free with legendary jazz artists and educators including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride, Lewis Nash and Danilo Pérez, among others.
