Trevor, the new musical that was in rehearsals ahead of its New York premiere when theaters shut down last spring, will begin performances Monday, October 25, 2021 at Stage 42 (442 West 42nd Street, near 9th Avenue). Opening night is Wednesday, November 10. 13-year-old Holden William Hagelberger from Sugarland, Texas has been cast in the role of “Trevor” following a process which included a national virtual casting call with over 1300 submissions.
Holden, who arrived in New York this week, will lead the 18-member company: Mark Aguirre, Aaron Alcaraz, Ava Briglia, Sammy Dell, Ellie Kim, Colin Konstanty, Diego Lucano, Alyssa Emily Marvin, Isabel A. Medina, Echo Deva Picone, Brandi Porter, Dan Rosales, Aryan Simhadri, Yasmeen Sulieman, Sally Wilfert, and Jarrod Zimmerman.
Trevor casting director Merri Sugarman said, “We probably saw close to 2000 kids for the show, and hundreds strictly for the title role. We knew we were looking for a purple unicorn. That somehow this beautiful, extraordinarily talented boy found his way to us against all odds is beyond thrilling.”

Trevor — based on an original story by Celeste Lecesne and the eponymous Academy Award-winning short film — is about 13-year-old Trevor, a force of nature with a vivid imagination. As he deals with becoming a teenager, Trevor struggles to navigate his own identity and determine how he fits in a challenging world. It’s 1981 in America, and Trevor Nelson is busy navigating adolescence in suburbia while dreaming of a life in show business. When an embarrassing incident at school suddenly puts him in the wrong spotlight, Trevor must summon the courage to forge his own path. A deeply moving and funny story of self-discovery and the power of acceptance, Trevor is about living your best life with a ton of passion… and a touch of pizzazz.
Trevor features book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis (both from Southern Comfort). Direction is by Marc Bruni and choreography is by Josh Prince (both from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical).
The creative team also includes sets by Donyale Werle (Tony Award Peter and the Starcatcher); costumes Mara Blumenfeld; lights Peter Kaczorowski; sound Brian Ronan and Cody Spencer; music director Matt Deitchman; and orchestrator Greg Pliska.
