DOCUMENTARY LOVERS, HERE’S YOUR CHANNEL
(and a free flick to watch)

I’ve been checking out MagellanTV for a few weeks now, and I’m very impressed with the vast selection of documentaries. Even more amazing at the streaming quality. Even showing on my older TV, the images simply pop out of the screen. The content for this inexpensive, ad-free service is varied, beautiful and always fascinating.

Then there’s the great storytelling. I chose the extraordinarily fascinating The Strange Life of Dr. Frankenstein for Stage and Cinema readers to view without having to pay or give up any personal information. I guarantee you’ll learn something about Mary Shelley’s book and its history that you didn’t know before. Click and enjoy! (This link is available until June 9, 2021.)

The service appeals to me personally because I am a National Parks fanatic, and I also love art and travel and music. Don’t expect the type of narrative docs that would be seen in film festivals and awards shows; these are the great stories of History and Historical Dramas, Science, and Civilization. The documentary collections are deeper and broader than just about any other streaming service available. There are thousands of shows about war, ancient history, science and technology, crime and culture. And the exclusive playlists — which dive deep into people and events that shaped our world — are addictive.

These high-quality movies and series are clearly photographed by the world’s best filmmakers, so the 4k Nature and Space programs are especially thrilling. And while some of the films are a bit hokey or syrupy — in the vein of a Visitor Center or The Wonderful World of Disney — the educational benefit is marvelous. Most important, the images are gorgeous. Really gorgeous. The home page still downloads a bit slowly, but the streaming is perfection — not a sign of buffering.
