TAPPING TROUBLES AWAY

Michelle Dorrance, founder and artistic director of Dorrance Dance, is one of the most sought after tap dancers of her generation. Her imaginative work, which continually pushes the boundaries of this time-honored form, made her a MacArthur Fellow. Last year on Broadway, she staged the most awesome and original tap routine for Tony Yazbek in Flying Over Sunset. Beginning tomorrow, her company is coming to the Joyce in New York for two weeks to offer a three-work program of world premieres that exemplifies the amazing array for which her company is known. The program, which runs December 7-18, 2022, features the Women of STOMP and tap dancer, actor, and singer/songwriter Aaron Marcellus.

3 World Prenieres: Rhythms of Being, 45th & 8th, A Little RoomThe worlds of dance, music and theatrical performance collide in Rhythms of Being, a collaborative work between Dorrance and the women of the long-running Off-Broadway hit STOMP. With choreography by Dorrance and a body percussion score devised by the performers, the explosive new work will invigorate and electrify Joyce audiences. Former STOMP company members Allison Easter, Kimmarie Elle, Fritzlyn Hector, Stephanie Marshall, and Vickie Tanner are set to perform.

For another world premiere work, 45th & 8th, Dorrance looks closer to home for her collaborators. Dorrance Dance company member Marcellus takes the reins to create and perform live original music with fellow musicians Kyle Everett, Matt Parker, Gregory Richardson. Joining the musicians and Dorrance on stage are dancers Elizabeth Burke, Luke Hickey, Claudia Rahardjanoto, Leonardo Sandoval, and Byron Tittle.

The third piece is a world premiere duet, A Little Room, choreographed and danced by Ephrat Asherie and Dorrance with original music by Donovan Dorrance.
