A Dazzling Night of Song and Tribute
Broadway took up residence on the banks of the Potomac last night as the Anthem Theatre played host to the Signature Theatre’s annual Sondheim Award Gala, this year honoring the iconic Mandy Patinkin. It was an evening where legends mingled with rising stars, and the power of live theatre shimmered in every note.
The gala opened with a fitting choice: Awa Sal Secka launched the evening’s performances with a rousing “Putting It Together,” instantly capturing the spirit of collaboration and artistry that defined both Sondheim’s work and Patinkin’s career. Tracy Lynn Olivera followed with a sultry and sharp “Live Alone and Like It,” bringing her signature wit and warmth to the stage.
Angel Lozada, currently electrifying audiences as Usnavi in Signature’s In The Heights, shared a heartfelt tribute to Patinkin, citing his portrayals of Che in Evita and George in Sunday in the Park with George as dream roles. His acoustic, emotionally raw rendition of “High Flying Adored” was a standout moment—both a nod to Patinkin’s legacy and a glimpse of a bright future.
In a touching interlude, and covering for Nathan Gunn, Matthew Scott honored the recently passed William Finn with “The Games I Play” from Falsettos. Delivered with vulnerability and grace, it was a quiet reminder of the evening’s larger themes: legacy, artistry, and the emotional truths that music can unlock.
Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford brought a welcome surprise to the program with a delicate, cleverly arranged medley of “Children and Art” and “Children Will Listen.” Her nuanced performance drew audible sighs from the crowd, marrying two of Sondheim’s most reflective works into a single, shimmering whole.
Ben Platt stepped into one of Sondheim’s most complex characters with “Finishing the Hat,” delivering it with piercing clarity and reverence. His interpretation of George was introspective, elegant, and deeply felt—one of the evening’s most powerful solos.
The night reached its emotional crescendo with the finale of Sunday in the Park with George. Platt, once again as George, led a stageful of voices—Broadway luminaries and Signature favorites alike—in a stirring “Sunday.” Just when it seemed the night could not be more transcendent, Mandy Patinkin himself crossed the stage to join the ensemble, taking his place quietly in the back row of the chorus. It was a breathtaking, unscripted moment of humility and full-circle tribute that could only happen in live theatre.
The 2025 Sondheim Award Gala was more than a celebration of Mandy Patinkin—it was a celebration of everything he stands for: passion, innovation, vulnerability, and the enduring magic of musical theatre.
