Theater Review: THE HEIDI CHRONICLES (Group Rep)

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE,
THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME
A friend warned me that The Heidi Chronicles might feel dated—after all, Wendy Wasserstein’s Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play ends in 1987. Nothing could be further from the truth. Group Rep’s production, directed with a sure hand by Brent Beerman, proves Heidi’s journey from the late ’60s into the Reagan era still brims with wit, longing, and relevance. At its center, Amy Earhart delivers an exceptional performance—warm, wry, and quietly fierce—as art historian Heidi navigating the shifting tides of feminism, friendship, and romance. The wall of empty picture frames behind the set is an inspired visual metaphor for lives still being defined, though it does make projections a little hard to catch. One can forgive the limited budget when the storytelling is this sharp and the performances this good.

Earhart is matched by a top-notch ensemble—especially Amy Shaughnessy as bestie Susan, Hudson Long as gay friend Peter, and Alex Scyocurka as the incorrigible love interest Scoop—who make every exchange bristle with authenticity and lived-in connection. Shon LeBlanc’s perfectly dated costumes let the decades glide by without feeling like a gimmick. Most importantly, Wasserstein’s script still sparkles as literature—sharp, funny, and quietly moving—and here it’s delivered with an ease that makes you forget the years on the calendar. Heidi may end the play alone, but this revival—which flies by even at 140 minutes—makes you feel like you’ve just spent the evening with old friends who still have something important to say.
