Concert Review: JOHN LEGEND (Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour at Wolf Trap)

Legendary tribute tour featuring John Legend's music.

A LEGEND AT WOLF TRAP

Two decades after Get Lifted announced him as a singular voice in modern R&B, John Legend is celebrating the album with a tour that feels both polished and personal. At Wolf Trap’s Filene Center, the blend of natural beauty and architectural warmth provided a setting worthy of the music.

Under the pavilion’s sweeping wooden roof, fans filled every seat, while thousands more picnicked on the sloping lawn, sipping wine and swaying under the stars. Fireflies blinked at the edges of the meadow as Legend took his place at the upright piano center stage — his anchor throughout the night. To his right stood three powerhouse backup singers — sirens in harmony — joined by a guitarist. To his left, a bassist and horn section (trumpet and saxophone) balanced the sound, with percussion, keyboards, and synth rounding out the ensemble. The setup gave the show intimacy without losing grandeur.

The audience reflected that same richness — diverse in age and background, from date-night couples to groups of friends — underscoring how Legend’s blend of church, soul, and pop crosses boundaries. Early in the show, he recalled his musical beginnings: his grandfather a pastor, his grandmother the church organist who first taught him piano. That story set up a moving rendition of “Precious Lord,” grounding the evening in gospel roots.

The heart of the set came from Get Lifted: “Let’s Get Lifted Again,” “Used to Love U,” and “Alright” still carried the bounce of youth, sharpened by two decades of experience. Legend also honored his collaborators, weaving in nods to Lauryn Hill (“Everything Is Everything”), The Roots (“You Got Me”), Bilal (“Soul Sista”), and Kanye West (“Jesus Walks”), tracing the scene that shaped him. He surprised fans with a smoldering cover of the Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” blending its hypnotic groove with his own “I Can Change.” Later, he brought extra star power with Estelle’s “American Boy” and a playful nod to Alicia Keys’ influence with a snippet of “You Don’t Know My Name,” highlighting the friends and collaborators who have helped shape his career.

During “Ordinary People,” D.C.’s Ari Lennox joined him for a tender duet that sent the throng into cheering. Later, in a lighter moment, Legend asked, “Any lovely ladies from the DMV want to dance with me?” and invited one lucky fan up for “Slow Dance.”

Though the grooves were irresistible, it was the ballads that stopped time. “Save Room” charmed, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” swayed, and “Glory,” his Oscar-winning anthem with Common, rose into something larger than performance — a prayer for justice that hushed the crowd before igniting it again.

The encore sealed the night. “All of Me” became a massive singalong, with the audience nearly drowning out Legend on the chorus. He closed with “Live It Up,” sending couples dancing in the aisles while cheers rolled up the hillside lawn beneath the night sky.

The concert — which tours through the end of the year — was tightly rehearsed, every cue and transition precise, yet between the gospel storytelling, the flawless harmonies of his backup singers, the groove of his band, a hometown guest, and the intimacy of a slow dance plucked from the crowd, the night felt alive, warm, and unforgettable.

Legend’s Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour isn’t just about looking back — it’s about tracing a legacy. At Wolf Trap, he proved again that he remains a voice of sincerity and soul, capable of uniting patrons in one song.
