TWO WOMEN, ONE MATCH—
STRIKE CAREFULLY
Jen Silverman’s combustible roommate saga kicks off Desert Ensemble Theatre’s last lap
Jen Silverman’s The Roommate is a stunning opener for Desert Ensemble Theatre’s 15th and final season. Directed by Kudra Wagner, this darkly comedic exploration of second chances, self-discovery, and unlikely friendship captivates from the start. With powerhouse performances from Sonia Reavis as Sharon and Tammy Taylor as Robyn, this production promises to be a standout in what will surely be a memorable season.
At the heart of The Roommate is Sharon, a middle-aged woman who, after a recent divorce, has decided to leave behind her mundane life in the suburbs and try something completely new. Enter Robyn, her new roommate—an unconventional and free-spirited woman with a mysterious past. The two women couldn’t be more different, but their developing bond becomes the spine of the play, full of humor, surprises, and profound moments of connection.
Sonia Reavis
Sonia Reavis shines as Sharon, giving a performance that effortlessly combines vulnerability, sharp wit, and growing self-awareness. Her portrayal of a woman in the midst of reinvention is both relatable and poignant, making Sharon a character we care about from the very first scene. Reavis skillfully navigates the range of emotions Sharon experiences as she grapples with the tension between staying in her comfort zone and embracing the chaos that Robyn brings into her life.
Tammy Taylor
Tammy Taylor brings an irresistible energy to Robyn, her presence filling the stage with both warmth and an unpredictable edge. Robyn’s offbeat charm and her mysterious backstory are complemented perfectly by Taylor’s charismatic, fearless performance. The chemistry between Reavis and Taylor is electric, and their performances together are a masterclass in how to develop tension, comedy, and emotional depth in a limited space.

Kudra Wagner’s direction is sharp and thoughtful. The intimate setting of the theatre only amplifies the raw, close-knit nature of the characters’ journey, drawing the audience in as if they, too, were sharing the apartment with Sharon and Robyn. Wagner keeps the energy flowing, ensuring that each twist and turn in the narrative feels earned and authentic.

The Roommate is a powerful reminder of Desert Ensemble Theatre’s ability to showcase complex, heartfelt stories, and it’s a fitting way to open their final season. It’s a play about reinvention, about stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, and most importantly, about the unexpected ways people come into our lives and change us. The Roommate leaves a lasting impression that will surely resonate long after the final curtain falls.
The Desert Ensemble Theatre team has set a high bar for this 15th season, and The Roommate proves that the company’s legacy of top-tier theater will be one to remember. Kudos to the entire cast and crew for an unforgettable opening night!
