Theater Review: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (Rainbow Entertainment at Palm Springs Cultural Center)

hedwig

Rainbow Entertainment Group’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch opened with a bang at the Palm Springs Cultural Center tonight, delivering a performance that left the audience on their feet, buzzing with energy. This raw, unapologetic, and fiercely theatrical show, which runs for just two more performances through November 22, is a must-see for those who appreciate both bold performances and high-caliber musicianship.

At the heart of the production is the incomparable Hedwig—played by the brilliantly expressive Jordon Carnegie. From the moment he steps onto the stage, Hedwig commands the room with a mix of vulnerability and defiance. His voice is both razor-sharp and haunting, capturing the complexity of the character’s pain, humor, and boundless energy. It’s not just a performance; it’s a journey through Hedwig’s turbulent world, and this actor’s commitment to the role is nothing short of electrifying.

The chemistry between Hedwig and the supporting cast members is palpable. Particularly notable is Hailie MacKay as Yitzhak, who brings an understated yet powerful presence to the stage. Yitzhak’s journey, caught in a struggle for identity and validation, complements Hedwig’s larger-than-life persona. Their vocals together are stunning, and the dynamic between the two only deepens as the show progresses.

Hedwig’s band The Angry Inch is a tight, energetic ensemble that brings a raucous, driving sound that elevates the entire production. The musicians, including Joe Shaughnessy (Bassist), Peter Craft (Drummer), Marco Baroz (Guitar), Sara Gambina (Keyboard) give each song a fresh, electrifying interpretation while staying true to the heart of the original score. The band’s ability to capture the raw, gritty energy of the rock music that defines Hedwig adds a layer of authenticity to the experience, making the music feel like a living, breathing entity on stage.

Jordon Carnegie, who also directed this production, has done an incredible job of balancing the iconic glam-punk aesthetic of Hedwig with the deeper emotional themes of the show, particularly the questions of identity, transformation, and the search for belonging. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a triumph of passion, talent, and creativity.
