Every great career has a starting point. For some actors, it is a lead role in a blockbuster film. But for others, it is much smaller. For Tom Cruise, it was a single scene in a romantic drama, which most people have long forgotten about. That film was Endless Love, released back in July 1981.  Tom Cruise did not walk onto a set and demand attention. Instead, he earned it. It all started with a minor character named Billy, who spoke a few lines of dialogue. But he had a whole lot of raw energy. 

A Movie Built Around Young Love 

The film Endless Love was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. He was known for his passionate directing style and vibrantly cinematic visuals. The film was adapted from a novel of the same name published in 1979 by author Scott Spencer. Rights were soon acquired and production began on September 22, 1980, concluding nearly three months later on December 19th. The movie follows the story of a young couple experiencing obsessive teenage love. Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt starred as the young lovers. The plot was heavily focused on the tumultuous aspects of adolescent relationships. Think grand gestures, awful decisions, and raging hormones. Oh, and every now and then, we get to see a then 19-year-old Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise’s First Feature Film Role: Who Was Billy?

Tom Cruise made his first appearance playing a role named Billy. It was a small role. In fact, he is only in one scene the entire movie. However, what he lacks in screen time, he makes up for with spunk. In his brief moment in the spotlight, Cruise recounts how he burned a house down. He beams while saying the line with such unchecked energy that you can’t help but be enraptured by it. Tom Cruise was not a trained actor at 19 years old. But even from this moment, we can see he was born to entertain. Sure, his role in Endless Love does not necessarily stand out as cinematic greatness. But when you consider it was his first appearance on the big screen… look where it led.

He Didn’t Get the Lead Role 

As fun as it is to talk about how Tom Cruise made his debut, there is an even juicier bit of trivia to discuss. Cruise did not audition for his small role in Endless Love. In fact, he auditioned to play the lead role of David. Martin Hewitt got the lead role, but Cruise’s audition was so good they decided to give him a role anyway. Can you imagine being offered a role in a movie just because the lead actor liked your audition? It goes to show you that sometimes things happen for a reason. Think about that for a second. We could be looking at a world where Tom Cruise was the lead in what is now a forgotten film. Instead, he got cut. And ending up with a small role in Endless Love was probably one of the best things that ever happened to him.

Other Future Stars in the Film 

Tom Cruise was not the only future movie star to grace the screen in Endless Love. Alongside Cruise was Ian Ziering, who would go on to play Steve Sanders on Beverly Hills, 90210. Ziering would also make his feature film debut alongside Cruise in Endless Love. You could also catch Jami Gertz as herself in one scene. Fans would know her years later as Star from The Lost Boys. So, within one film, we have introductions to what would become Beverly Hills, 90210, The lost Boys, and Cruise’s storied career. It’s amazing when you think about it. A slice-of-drama from 1981 would introduce us to characters and actors that would shape pop culture for decades. No one could have known these people at the time. That’s the fun thing about history. 

What Came After Endless Love 

Tom Cruise wasn’t finished learning the trade after Endless Love. Later that same year, he was able to snag a larger role in Taps. In it, he played a juvenile military student with a short temper. This would be Cruise’s big break. He was finally able to showcase his abilities on the big screen for all of Hollywood to see. Quickly, word spread about this young upstart.  Risky Business came out in 1983 and gave Cruise the perfect opportunity to prove himself. He played Joel Goodsen, a teenager who throws house parties in his parent’s house while they’re away on a business trip. It was a hit, and Cruise was proved himself to be more than just charismatic; he could actually act. Top Gun would follow four years later and solidify Cruise as a true movie star. Playing the role of Maverick, Cruise stomped on pop culture with a one-of-a-kind character that will forever be remembered as a true Hollywood icon.

Why We Should Care About Tom Cruise’s First Film

I get it, who cares about some random scene in a cheesy romance movie from 1981? No one tends to pay attention to these small moments in history. However, there is a reason we are talking about Tom Cruise’s first feature film right now. Tom Cruise could have been a nobody. He had the opportunity to be the leading man in Endless Love, and he did not get the part. But instead of quitting, he showed up to work his small role and absolutely killed it. Tom Cruise grew up to be one of the biggest names in not only movies but worldwide entertainment. He has been acting for nearly 40 years and still shows no signs of slowing down. He will always push his body to the limits for his craft because he loves what he does. Sure, some of you may hate him for it. But we cannot argue with his work ethic and perseverance. The young boy who played Billy went on to join an elite group of actors. How many actors can you name that still perform their own stunts at 56 years old? Tom Cruise got his start with a small role in a forgotten movie. But because he showed up that day and did his job, he was able to launch a career that most of us can only dream about.
