A DRESS FOR SUCCESS

A polished TYA production that treats
identity and imagination with care.

Mosaic Theatricals’ production of Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress at Patio Playhouse does not just aim to charm young audiences—it makes its point clearly. This is a heartfelt lesson for children of all ages about belonging, delivered with a level of care and polish that suggests the company takes its Theatre for Young Audiences work as seriously as any mainstage production.

Adapted by juliany taveras from the children’s book by Christine Baldacchino, the story follows Morris Micklewhite, an adventurous child with a large imagination. At school, however, that imagination starts to be tamped down by other children’s ideas of who is allowed to express themselves and in what ways.

The affirmation “you belong” echoes throughout the production, from walking into the 69-seat Kalmia Street Black Box Theatre, to the preshow announcement, to moments during and after the show. Walking in, audiences are invited to hop onto Morris’s spaceship, then escorted into the theater and greeted by Joshua Gallagher’s gorgeous set, which creates a space that speaks to the children in the play and to the youngsters in the house, inviting them to relate and imagine. Featuring a floor and wall treatment that resembles crayon drawings, the set looks stunningly like it is built by kids. There is also a bed that transforms into a rocket ship, along with a series of props that aid director Melissa Glasgow’s engaging transitions (one such design that stands out is a sign reading “Monday” which resembles the side of a bus).

Annelise Salazar’s lighting—which include complex well-designed cues, beautiful practical lanterns and a lamp—support those transitions. My only qualm, which is very minor, is that I found Rick Sims‘ pre-made sound to be occasionally overpowering.

This outstanding ensemble (Matthew Alter, Eileen Bowman, Josey Porras, Kailey Madoka Agpaoa, and Brennen Winspear) is led by a director whose attention to detail is evident. The entire production has a polished, professional quality. The choice to produce a children’s show at this level signals that Mosaic is committed to reaching diverse audiences. With its emphasis on belonging, Mosaic Theatricals (formerly CCAE Theatricals) embarks under a new banner with a confident tone.
