COLD RAIN, HOT CLASSICS
Sting ignites Wolf Trap’s summer season
Sting opened the summer season with a 3-night stay at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap. On Friday, May 22, his performance easily overcame the evening’s cold and rain. If the weather threatened to dampen spirits, Sting’s two-hour Sting 3.0 set quickly warmed the crowd.
Drawing from both his solo catalog and his years with The Police, the evening moved seamlessly through classics like “Message in a Bottle,” “Englishman in New York,” “Fields of Gold,” and “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” alongside newer material such as “I Wrote Your Name (Upon My Heart)” and deeper cuts including “The Hounds of Winter” and “You Still Touch Me.” The result was a set that balanced crowd-pleasing nostalgia with enough surprises to keep longtime fans fully invested.
One might expect a three-piece format to leave some of the Police material feeling underpowered, but Sting and company put those concerns to rest almost immediately. Backed by longtime guitarist Dominic Miller and percussionist Chris Maas, Sting delivered lean, muscular arrangements of songs like “Driven to Tears,” “Walking on the Moon,” and “Can’t Stand Losing You / Reggatta de Blanc” that allowed the songs themselves to shine.
At times, the sound felt so rich and layered that it seemed as though backing tracks might be in play, but closer listening revealed it was largely the result of Miller’s deft use of pedals and effects. The trio consistently generated a surprisingly full sound without sacrificing clarity.
Another welcome element was the extended instrumental passages that closed several songs, adding a compelling musical dimension to what could otherwise have been a straightforward greatest-hits revue. These moments gave the musicians room to stretch, particularly on “Shape of My Heart” and “Desert Rose.”
Sting’s smooth, easy rapport with the audience helped maintain a sense of intimacy despite the large outdoor setting. Still, his interaction was unevenly distributed throughout the evening. The first and last half-hours featured little to no banter, which occasionally made stretches of the show—even through towering performances of “King of Pain” and “Every Breath You Take”—feel like an uninterrupted nostalgic journey.
Still, the strength of the musicianship, the elegance of the stripped-back arrangements, and the emotional resonance of songs ranging from “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” to “When We Dance” carried the night. Even in the cold rain, Sting proved more than capable of heating up Wolf Trap and launching the summer season in memorable fashion.
