Theater Review: DAY AFTER DAY (THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF DORIS DAY) (The Broadwater Second Stage / Hollywood Fringe)

CALAMITY JANE
MEETS LAS VEGAS

A charming tribute delivers plenty of
Doris Day favorites, even if the biography
occasionally takes a back seat

Deborah Robin is Doris Day in Day After Day (The Life and Music if Doris Day), presented by P3 Theatre Company at The Hollywood Fringe

Day After Day (The Life and Music of Doris Day) is like a slick—very slick—lounge act, the type you’d expect to see during Vegas’s heyday. Penned by Tony Santamauro, with Christy Mauro-Cohen serving as director and choreographer, Day After Day is both charming and somewhat educational.

Christopher Showerman, as “The Fan,” fills every role from the bandleaders who gave Doris Mary Anne von Kappelhoff her big breaks to the various husbands who bled her bank accounts dry. Showerman, together with Deborah Robin as Doris Day, delivers a Reader’s Digest version of the singer’s life story (of which the show could have done with a little more) and a stunning number of Day’s classic tunes, from “Sentimental Journey” to “Que Sera, Sera” (of which the show could have done with a few less).

Deborah Robin and Christopher Showerman

Kudos—with a capital K—to David Cohen, musical director and the most entertaining accompanist in recent memory, and to Theresa Espino, the designated “backstage goddess,” which she most certainly is.

A bit long in the tooth but utterly entertaining, for fans of Doris Day, musicals, and old Hollywood history, Day After Day (The Life and Music of Doris Day) awaits you at The Broadwater’s Second Stage.
