LIFE IN A BLENDER

A chaotic solo show anchored by
an engaging performer.

Kelly Mullis‘s solo show Army Brat at the Broadwater Second Stage carries a very accurate subtitle: “The Fever Dream into the Life of a Military Kid.” As penned by the performer, the show is a splattering of her life, her father’s life, her mother’s life, (SPOILER ALERT!) her actual father’s life, the Sixties, the Vietnam War, garnished with historical slides, the occasional song, and an “acid trip” video by Mark Townsend. It’s a tad overwhelming, just like a fever dream usually is.

Director Wayne Orkline handles the kaleidoscopic shifting of scenes skillfully, but trimming and focusing the material would have been of greater service to the show.

However, what’s worth the price of admission to Army Brat is Mullis herself; she is delightfully chaotic, deviously dramatic, and bewitching to watch.
