MAMMA MIA! WHAT A NIGHT
A terrific cast and irresistible ABBA
score turn Sonoma’s Field of Dreams
into a joyous summer dance party
Several Broadway stars have escaped New York’s scorching heat to show up on the bucolic Sonoma stage under the stars in Transcendence Theatre Company’s Mamma Mia! They are part of a sensational cast of 24 who create a joyful explosion of dance and music filling the “Field of Dreams.”
Mamma Mia! features 22 songs by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, two members of the wildly successful Swedish pop group ABBA. Conceived by Judy Craymer, Catherine Johnson fashioned ABBA’s songs into a fantasy plot set on a Greek island. A hit on Broadway and in film, it now shines into the night just a few blocks from Sonoma Square.
A young bride-to-be seeks to determine which of her mother’s long-ago secret suitors is actually her dad. Karsten Lane Flake as the charming Sophie invites the three unsuspecting men to her wedding, where mayhem ensues. Blake Whyte, Matt Gibson and Brian Ray Norris bring distinct personalities and hilarious confusion to their roles as Sam, Harry and Bill.
Donna, Sophie’s hardworking mom, suspects nothing. Allison Pearce knocks her lead role out of the park with vocals and limber moves that defy gravity. Her BFF sidekicks, Rosie and Tanya, played by Lori Haley Fox and Tiffani Barbour, bring outrageous behavior to the taverna, and the audience loved every bit of it. And the exuberant ensemble keeps the stage in almost constant motion, giving the production much of its infectious energy.
Tony Gonzalez, a multi-skilled veteran performer, directs and also serves as associate choreographer and scenic designer. Monica Kapoor, associate director, supplies choreography that spills over the stage and into the aisles. Music director Susan Draus is once again in charge, with associate music director and conductor Kenji Harada leading a robust ten-piece band just offstage. They are intermittently joined for stunning harmonies by ensemble members—when said members aren’t busting a groove onstage, that is.
Artistic Director and Transcendence co-founder Amy Miller touts the show as the “best night ever!” She’s absolutely on the mark—Mamma Mia! makes it so.
Arrive as early as 5 at Fazio Field, now christened the “Field of Dreams.” Parking is available in multiple lots, with electric trikes ferrying passengers to check-in. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the umbrella-covered tables, while food trucks ply their wares, premium wine and beer vendors offer glassfuls, and low-key live music encourages friendly camaraderie. Assigned seating begins as patrons adjust their hats before the sun goes down. When the show starts, have a jacket ready in case it gets cool—and prepare to be blown away!
