A showbiz raconteur brings stories,
songs, and Michael Bublé to L.A.

There are memoirs—and then there are memoirs written by Marc Shaiman, who has spent decades at the center of Broadway, film, and pop culture, collecting stories the rest of us only hear secondhand.

On Tuesday, May 5, the GRAMMY Museum hosts an evening with the Tony, Grammy, and Emmy-winning composer and lyricist, celebrating his new memoir Never Mind the Happy: Showbiz Stories from a Sore Winner. In conversation with Michael Bublé in the intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater, Shaiman will revisit a career that spans everything from Hairspray and Sister Act to Mary Poppins Returns, not to mention his long-standing collaborations with Bette Midler and a who’s-who of entertainment royalty.

The title alone signals the tone: candid, self-deprecating, and laced with the kind of insider humor that comes from surviving both triumphs and near-misses (including, as Shaiman himself likes to note, multiple Oscar losses). Expect an evening that moves easily between storytelling and performance, with Shaiman at the piano, unpacking the moments—big and small—that shaped his creative life.

Part retrospective, part cabaret, and part industry tell-all, the event promises the rare pleasure of hearing a master craftsman reflect on the work while still very much in the act of doing it.
