For more than two decades, New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival has been one of New York’s most welcome annual traditions, offering audiences the chance to sample an extraordinary range of dance styles and companies without the hefty ticket prices that often accompany them. Returning September 22 through October 3, the festival once again promises an eclectic mix of ballet, contemporary dance, flamenco, and genre-defying works from artists around the world.

What has always made Fall for Dance special is its spirit of discovery. You might come to see a favorite company and leave talking about an artist you’ve never encountered before. This year’s lineup ranges from internationally celebrated names like Martha Graham Dance Company, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, PHILADANCO!, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Miami City Ballet, and The Royal Ballet to exciting international artists from Spain, Israel, Germany, Australia, and beyond. Along the way are 11 premieres, including two New York City Center commissions: one by former New York City Ballet principal Robbie Fairchild, inspired by Shakespeare, and another by Australian collective Pony Cam, whose Burnout Paradise became an Off-Broadway hit.

Just as appealing is the festival’s variety. One evening might pair a virtuosic ballet pas de deux with contemporary works, flamenco, and experimental choreography. Rather than focusing on a single style, Fall for Dance celebrates the breadth of today’s dance landscape, making it equally rewarding for seasoned dance lovers and curious newcomers alike.
