THANK YOU FOR BEING A QUEEN
Four drag icons, two episodes,
and twenty years of perfectly timed shade
Now celebrating its 20th consecutive year, The Golden Girls Live: The Christmas Episodes has become one of San Francisco’s most reliable holiday traditions. This drag reinvention of classic sitcom episodes is now a full-scale theatrical event. The joke never gets old: four queens, four beloved characters, and comedy that proves friendship — and cheesecake — age beautifully in live renditions of two classic sitcom episodes — “What a Difference a Date Makes” and “The Artist.”

What began in 2005 as a living-room performance for friends quickly snowballed into an annual event. Over the years, the drag take on The Golden Girls grew from house parties to packed houses, eventually settling into the Curran’s spacious downtown stage — a fitting home for a show that has become as much a part of the holiday season as carol singing and ugly sweaters.
Why do audiences flock to see four drag performers reenact episodes of a 1980s sitcom? Part of it is pure nostalgia. During its seven-season NBC run from 1985 to 1992, The Golden Girls paired razor-sharp writing with timeless themes of friendship, aging, and love. It tackled then-taboo subjects — HIV, abortion, homosexuality, interracial dating, even suicide — with frankness, humor, and compassion that were well ahead of their time.
That writing, packed with double entendres, sarcasm, and camp, proves a natural fit for drag. Casting remains the key to the show’s success. D’arcy Drollinger as Rose, Holotta Tymes as Sophia, and Matthew Martin as Blanche are pitch-perfect, capturing not just the look but the rhythms and comic instincts of their characters. For the third consecutive year, Coco Peru returns from Southern California as Dorothy, delivering deadpan wit and sardonic timing that land every punchline.
As someone who’s seen the show every year, it’s remarkable how fresh it remains. The performers milk every line, trade knowing glances, and land reaction shots with veteran precision. This isn’t just a drag show — it’s expert sitcom comedy performed live.
The Curran’s generous stage allows for a full-scale recreation of the familiar living room and kitchen. Scenic Designer Sarah Phykitt and California Scenic Designs have filled the space with pastel walls, houseplants, throw pillows, and Christmas décor, right down to garlands, twinkling lights, and a towering tree. Katie Dowse, with specialty costumes by Kipper Snacks, outfits each “lady” in bright pastels and perfectly chosen accessories, including Sophia’s ever-present purse.
Supporting players add extra sparkle. Manuel Caneri, Michael Phillis, and Snaxx rotate through comic roles and cameos, keeping the energy high. Between the episodes, pianist Tom Shaw leads the audience in a Christmas carol sing-along, turning two 22-minute sitcom episodes into a full-length holiday celebration.

What ultimately makes The Golden Girls Live: The Christmas Episodes endure isn’t just nostalgia or camp, but the precision and generosity of its comedy. These performers understand that the laughs land hardest when they’re grounded in character, timing, and affection — and that’s exactly what they deliver, year after year. The audience isn’t simply watching a parody; they’re sharing a ritual, one that celebrates friendship, aging, resilience, and joy with a knowing wink and a full heart.
A special opening-night thrill sealed the deal: Cindy Fee, who sang the original television theme song “Thank You for Being a Friend,” appeared after the curtain call to perform it live — a moment that closed the evening on a wave of pure, collective delight. (Ms. Fee performs opening weekend only.) It was the kind of full-circle flourish that reminds you why this show keeps coming back — and why audiences keep showing up.
