Mark Rylance meets Molière in a Nigerian-Jamaican
reimagining of the classic comedy

Molière is getting quite the makeover in London this fall. Oscar and Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance stars as Pastor Terrance Blake in the world premiere of Tartuffe (Remixed), Darren Raymond’s new adaptation of the 17th-century comedy, opening 4 September at Marylebone Theatre for a strictly limited seven-week run through October 24, 2026. Raymond, recipient of Shakespeare’s Globe’s 2025 Sam Wanamaker Award, also directs.

This Tartuffe transports Molière’s tale of religious hypocrisy into the world of a contemporary Nigerian-Jamaican family, mixing comedy, spoken word, music and rhyming verse. The outspoken Afolabi-Williams clan has gathered at Oga Afolabi’s mansion for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, with relatives descending on the house, traditions in full swing and apparently no shortage of opinions.

Enter Rylance’s Pastor Terrance Blake, a charismatic man of God who has gained Oga’s unwavering trust—and taken up residence in his home. His arrival reopens old wounds and tests family loyalties as faith itself becomes a battleground. With the wedding approaching, the family has to expose the truth before its newfound houseguest tears everything apart.

Joining Rylance are Blanche Williams as Grandma, Sara Mokonen as Adanna, Christopher Mbaki as D-Miz, Morenike Onajobi as Kemi, Ivandro Da Cruz Leite as Sinclair, Nakeba Buchanan as Elmire, Craig Blake as Delroy and Usifu Jalloh as Oga.

Raymond’s remix promises to retain the comic machinery of Molière while filtering its battles over faith, family, deception and speaking truth to power through an entirely different cultural lens. And Rylance as a charming religious fraud insinuating himself into somebody else’s household? That alone should be worth the trip to Marylebone.
