A trip to Bolivia lands a 20-year-old
inside a prison ruled by
violence, corruption, and cartels

At 20, Sharon Yitzhaki traveled to Bolivia and wound up accused of trying to smuggle 10 kilos of cocaine. The charge landed her in Mira Flores women’s prison, where she would spend nearly five years learning how to survive violence, corruption, addiction and cartel influence. Yitzhaki eventually wrote about the experience, and now her story becomes 10 Kilos, starring Daniella Kertesz and opening in New York on August 21 before heading to Los Angeles.

Kertesz, best known for playing Segen opposite Brad Pitt in World War Z, portrays Sharon as she enters prison far from home and unprepared for what awaits her. Survival requires her to learn quickly whom to trust, which rules matter and which ones can get her hurt. She also forms an unexpected family among the women living alongside her.

Director Doron Eran focuses not only on what happens to Sharon but on what prison makes her become. Stripped of the familiar rules of her life outside, she has to alter herself to function inside Mira Flores. That change, and what remains of the young woman who entered the prison by the time she leaves it, gives the true story more to work with than its sensational premise.

The cast also includes Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf, Fear the Walking Dead) as Diane, Leeoz Levy as Terry, Luna Mansour (Fauda) as Amparo, Tom Graziani as Roni, Juan Pablo Olyslager as Amadeo DeSoto, Juan Diego Rodriguez as Captain Marquez, Eyal Rozales as Angel Rodriguez and Paola Tirado as Doña Maucha.

Eran produces with Gabrielle Smith Almagor and Tomer Almagor, who also edited the film. Barry Markowitz, whose credits include Sling Blade and Crazy Heart, is the cinematographer.

The title tells you how Sharon got into trouble. 10 Kilos is more interested in the five years that followed.
