TIPS AND TITS
Bus Stop Productions LLC is a new entertainment company in the Coachella Valley focusing on lively and unique experiences appealing to all that enjoy local nightlife. Their current production, Sex Tips for a Straight Woman from a Gay Man (Sex Tips) runs through May 27, 2023 at the Margaritaville Resort in Palm Springs.
The how-to book Sex Tips for Straight Women from A Gay Man by Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman, which was a 1997 instant best seller and cult classic, serves as source material. The play — set during a local university’s meet-and-greet author’s event — takes the audience on a hysterical, interactive, and even heartfelt “how to” journey. Robyn (Brianna Eylicio), with help from her sexy assistant, Stefan (Alex Price), is the studious, uptight moderator who facilitates the event. The featured guest is the books lovable author, Dan Anderson (Jason Reale) from whom the “tips” come directly.
Handily directed by Douglas Katch Gray, the show balances a bit of insightful commentary on cultural sex norms with ridiculous and zany audience participation antics, largely facilitated by Dan. Reale has proven himself to be a versatile actor on stages throughout the desert and in Sex Tips his improvisation and comic prowess on full display. Eylicio is clearly having fun in the stereotypical role of the reserved college professor and why shouldn’t she be? She gets to play the lust interest of sexy Stefan. Price, also a versatile actor, gets to display his comic chops as the oblivious, ambiguously accented, sex pot.
Sex Tips is fun for all, but would make a great date night: the Orange County couple sitting behind me were the first participants to be picked. While I will leave the details of the scandalous acts they were forced into, it was clear they were having a ball.
Structurally, the play comes off somewhat disjointed as it progresses as chapters in a book, but with the participation antics and Stefan often on stage in his underwear, that is easily forgotten.
