SMALL MUSICAL, BIG HEART

An intimate Irish story about courage, community,
and the quiet power of living truthfully

There’s a certain kind of musical that doesn’t announce itself with spectacle, but sneaks up on you—softly, gently—and then leaves you wrecked. A Man of No Importance is that kind of show.

Opening May 8 at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, The Bent—one of Southern California’s few exclusively LGBTQ+ theater companies—takes on the Outer Critics Circle Award-winning chamber musical by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty, and Terrence McNally, the same team behind Ragtime. But where that musical sprawls, this one whispers. Set in 1964 Dublin, it follows Alfie Byrne, a shy bus conductor with a love of Oscar Wilde and amateur theatricals, who dares to stage Salome at his local church—setting off a quiet collision between personal truth and public expectation.

If that sounds modest, don’t be fooled. The score—lush, Irish-inflected, and deceptively simple—carries enormous emotional weight, while McNally’s book threads humor and heartbreak with surgical precision. It’s a story about secrecy, shame, chosen family, and the cost—and necessity—of being seen. And in the right hands, it lands with a force that far outweighs its scale.

Artistic Director Steven Rosenbaum directs, with Jason Mannino stepping into the central role of Alfie Byrne—a part that demands not just a strong voice, but a deeply felt interior life. The supporting cast, drawn from across the Coachella Valley, fills out the Dublin streets, church halls, and makeshift theater troupe that become Alfie’s world.

For The Bent, this marks a significant step: their first full musical, and a fitting one. Few shows speak more directly to the idea of theater as sanctuary—a place where people who don’t quite fit anywhere else can find each other, and themselves. In a cultural moment that often feels louder than it is thoughtful, A Man of No Importance offers something quieter—and, perhaps, more lasting.
