The silent trio returns to Chicago
with its first holiday show and an
unconventional take on seasonal cheer

Blue Man Group has spent decades turning paint, percussion, plumbing, and three silent blue heads into controlled chaos. This holiday season, they’re adding Christmas music to the mix. Blue Man Group’s A New Holiday Surprise, the company’s first-ever holiday production, comes to Chicago’s CIBC Theatre November 24–December 13, followed by a visit to Boston’s Boch Center Wang Theatre, December 15–23 as part of its inaugural national tour.

Classic holiday music gets the Blue Man treatment, performed on the group’s famously unconventional custom instruments. Along the way, the trio encounters seasonal traditions and rituals with its usual wide-eyed curiosity. Details are being kept largely under wraps, which seems appropriate for a show with “surprise” in its title.

Chicago is a particularly fitting stop. Blue Man Group was a fixture in the city for nearly three decades, beginning its long run at the Briar Street Theatre in 1997 and closing there in January 2025.

Music, visual comedy, audience interaction, and deadpan observations of human behavior remain part of the equation. The holidays should provide especially fertile territory. After all, few things humans do are quite as peculiar as chopping down a tree, dragging it indoors, covering it with lights, and putting presents underneath it.

Performances begin Thanksgiving week in Chicago, although even Blue Men apparently get Thanksgiving Day off. Tickets now on sale, offering both Chicago and Boston holiday cheer with considerably more percussion and blue paint.
