WIGGING OUT WITH
THE ORIGINAL HEDWIG

Celebrating a quarter-century of the film
with screenings, songs, and stories

Twenty-five years after Hedwig and the Angry Inch hit movie screens in a blast of glam rock, heartbreak, bad wigs, and defiant individuality, John Cameron Mitchell is getting back on the road with the character who changed his career and became one of musical theater’s great cult creations.

John Cameron Mitchell: Hedwig 25th Anniversary Tour comes to Southern California this fall, with Mitchell appearing at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on September 17 and 18, the Arlene & Dick Van Dyke Theater in Malibu on September 19, and the Palm Springs Cultural Center on November 7. Each stop features a new 4K screening of the 2001 film, followed by a live Q&A and a mini-acoustic performance. Meet-and-greets with Mitchell will also be available at all dates.

John Cameron Mitchell (Matthew Placek)

Mitchell and composer-lyricist Stephen Trask first brought Hedwig and the Angry Inch Off-Broadway in 1998, introducing the East German rock singer and her tale of love, loss, and identity. Three years later, Mitchell directed and starred in the film, earning the Sundance Film Festival’s Best Director Award. The musical reached Broadway in 2014 and won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. Mitchell stepped back into Hedwig’s heels the following year and received a Special Tony Award for his contribution to the show.

Fans are encouraged to make an occasion of it. Arrive dressed as Hedwig or in a look inspired by Mitchell’s work and you could leave with prizes from The Criterion Collection and The Punk Rock Museum. For a movie in which costume, makeup, music, and self-invention are practically inseparable, showing up overdressed seems entirely appropriate.

The real attraction is getting to revisit the film in the company of the man who created, directed, and first played its title character. A quarter-century later, Hedwig remains bruised, funny, outrageous, and stubbornly herself. Once the credits roll, Mitchell takes over live, with songs, conversation, and presumably a few stories accumulated during 25 years of Hedwig history.
